Andy Hoi-Csiu Chan (b. Taishan, Guangdong, 1944) is a unique and visionary artist whose distinguished practice of ink painting is eminently rooted in the art of Chinese tradition, however, he is also working towards transcending the field of ink painting through the innovative depiction of animals and natural scenes in his works. As he has stated:

画画要画能人所不能 For me, an accomplishment in ink painting is to paint what others are not able to paint (both conceptually and technically). (2017)

Carrying on the lineage of the late 19th century Lingnan School of ink painting, Chan studied with masters including 赵少昂Chao Shao-ang, 司徒奇Situ Qi, 丁衍庸 Ding Yanyong, 陈荆鸿 Chen Jinghong, he embraces both the heritage of Chinese calligraphy and painting, as well as various cultures that inspired him. He believes that:

As a contemporary Chinese ink painter, one needs to immerse oneself in the knowledge of the past endeavor in the field of ink painting. Moreover, he needs to be open-minded in incorporating any resources offered in the contemporary era into his art exploration with the goal of transcending from what has already been accomplished in the past. (2017)

Chan has been regarded as the “Godfather of Chinatown” for helping countless Chinese expatriate artist to adapt their life in Chicago. Throughout the 48 years of living in North America of which 38 years in Chicago, Chan had facilitated numerous cultural exchange events such as exhibitions and art talks that enriched the cultural life of local community in the city of Chicago, he also had given lectures and demonstrations in venues such as The Field Museum, Northwestern University, Chicago University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Chan also gives lessons on ink painting to numerous students, his works have been exhibited and collected by many prestigious institutions and organizations.
