The colorful clutter of our art today is a reincarnation of global phenomena such as cultural collision, political conflict and economic competition, and Shanghai is undoubtedly the fastest and most colorful metropolis in the process of globalization of today’s world. However, Shanghai as a modern super metropolis is not only because of its size, its huge population and its economic status in China, more importantly its contemporary art; because Shanghai has become a veritable international city of art and culture.

Let’s look at the history of modern Chinese art, Shanghai deserved to be the starting point of modern Chinese art. After its opening as a treaty port in mid nineteenth century, Shanghai ink painters, in the face of the impact of Western culture, took the lead in response; for the first time in the history of China’s ink painting, a modern school of ink painting – 海派 (Haipai, the Shanghai school) was born. A century and a half have passed, from the Manchu dynasty to the People’s Republic of China, China experienced an unprecedented change ever, art is no exception. However, the spirit of Shanghai School has not been changed. Today, Shanghai’s new generation of ink artists carry on the pioneering spirit of Haipai, and continue to create and explore in a broader context of contemporary art.

The Five Contemporary Ink Artists from Shanghai is an exhibition to be held at the Gallery of the Research House for Asian Art in coming Fall in Chicago, it will present five ink painters:Chai Yimin, He Saibang, Wu Yiming , Kong Yi and Liao Liao. They have long been active and engaged in ink art practice under the aspects of artistic concept, language and personal expression for decades. Their attempts of pushing ink art to a new phase seem effective; their works are filled with historical information and the reflections on issues of our gegenwart, all with unique individual perspectives and artistic personal touches.

The significance of this exhibition is that after so many Western droved waves and movements of Chinese contemporary art, such as Political Pop in late 80’s and the recent heat of ink art, the five Chinese ink artists have been able to reflect on the reality of both China, the world and on what is the artistic truth. Through their works, they provide some solutions to which could be the possibilities of the ink art for the future. And as well as for the Western audience to witness the profound changes in ink art of China.
